Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tax Regulations.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

195 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a company (details supplied) is reported to be working in a subcontracting capacity on the building site of the extension to Leinster House and is in breach of site and tax regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12756/99]

In the details supplied by the Deputy, he refers only to taxation matters and I take it that this is his main concern. As the Deputy will know, it is established practice that a Minister for Finance does not answer a parliamentary question about the tax affairs of an individual or a company, other than when the Deputy asking the question was acting on behalf of the taxpayer. In this instance it would appear that the Deputy is not asking the question with the consent of the company concerned. In these circumstances, therefore, I regret that particular information cannot be divulged on grounds of confidentiality.

I wish to assure the Deputy, however, that the activities of all companies operating in the construction sector here are actively monitored by the Revenue Commissioners to ensure compliance with all appropriate tax requirements. While it is not appropriate, therefore, to comment on a particular contractor, Revenue are active in this area and do indeed take account of any information they receive when planning their compliance activities.
