Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Petition Applications.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

310 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to assist a person (details supplied) in County Waterford in view of the circumstances; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12742/99]

I should remind the Deputy that the existence of a petition/application to open a petition does not preclude the Garda from enforcing warrants.

With regard to the person referred to by the Deputy, I can confirm that two warrants – for £300 or 14 days imprisonment for having no road tax and £150 or seven days imprisonment for having no insurance – were executed in Cork Prison on 27 January 1999 while he was on remand on another charge. The refusal of his request to visit another prisoner after his release is in line with standard practice.
