Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Paul Bradford

Question:

324 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if a group (details supplied) in County Cork which has been refused a grant from the young people's facilities and services fund will receive any alternative funding from his Department; his views on whether this group needs financial support to continue the excellent work it is doing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12754/99]

There is no source of funding available from the Vote of my Department under which the organisation could be considered for financial support for their project.

However, the organisation in question made an application for funding from the £0.5 million allocation set aside under the young people's facilities and services fund, which is administered by the Department of Education and Science, to assist voluntary organisations, with a regional and/or national remit, which have the capacity to deliver targeted education/prevention initiatives on a global basis with the aim of preventing the target group for the fund from becoming involved in drug misuse.

The application was assessed by an assessment committee, chaired by my Department, against very specific assessment criteria established for the operation of the fund, and the application was not recommended for funding.
