Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

80 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to provide a special curriculum for people with learning disabilities in view of the unsuitability of the mainstream curriculum for many of their requirements. [11606/99]

In 1998 the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, NCCA, established a steering committee for special education. Membership of this committee is drawn from the major bodies at both primary and post-primary levels affiliated to the NCCA Council, with provision for representation from some broader groups within special education.

The steering committee is addressing the issue of curricula for students with learning disabilities. It has established three small working groups to develop framework curricula in the areas of mild, moderate and severe/profound learning disability. In general, the members of these working groups are practitioners in special education and have a deep knowledge and understanding of the issues related to it.

The NCCA is preparing a discussion paper on a framework for the curriculum for pupils with the above learning disabilities. It is intended that this discussion paper will be completed later this year.
