Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Richard Bruton

Question:

114 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will grant those awaiting the hearing of asylum applications the opportunity to have a work permit without having to establish that there is no other EU national capable of doing the job. [12716/99]

At present work permits are not issued in respect of asylum seekers who are awaiting determination of their cases by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

I have however recently submitted proposals to Government which, if agreed, would allow permits to be issued in respect of certain categories of asylum seekers who have been here for six months or more.
