Vol. 505 No. 4

Written Answers. - Language Tuition.

Richard Bruton

Question:

168 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the arrangements, if any, in place to teach English as a foreign language to adult persons seeking refugee status. [14030/99]

In the case of adults granted refugee status, either long-term or temporary, my Department bears the cost of language tuition in order to assist them to participate in various aspects of our society in accordance with their needs and wishes. Such tuition is normally provided on contract and the provision has begun to be co-ordinated now by the refugee language support unit, recently established in Trinity College with funding support from my Department. The unit's functions are fulfilled in co-operation with the Refugee Agency, the Department of Education and Science, FÁS and refugee groups themselves.
