I am not aware of the situation referred to by the Deputy. Details of schools in the general area indicated are set out below.
The selection and enrolment of pupils in second-level schools is the responsibility of the authorities of the individual school. At present, schools are expected to disclose their admissions policy and the criteria used in selecting pupils. The Education Act, 1998, aims to create more transparency in decisions by schools by providing that they must publish their policy on admission to and participation in the school. The Act provides for the establishment of grievance procedure on a statutory basis within schools under which complaints concerning school enrolment policy may be investigated. The Act also provides for appeals against decisions by schools in relation to pupil enrolments to the Department. Work on the implementation of the Act is under way in my Department at present.
Where parents are unable to secure a suitable school placement, it is of course open to them to seek the assistance of my Department and every effort will be made to have the child in question enrolled in a suitable school in his or her locality as quickly as possible.
