Vol. 505 No. 7

Written Answers. - Compensation Claims.

Nora Owen

Question:

94 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the way in which a person (details supplied) could arrange to have compensation paid due to the fact her car was stolen; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14673/99]

As the Deputy may be aware, where damage is committed maliciously by persons acting on behalf of, or in connection with an unlawful organisation, the owner may apply to the relevant local authority for compensation under the terms of section 3 of the Malicious Injuries (Amendment) Act, 1986.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, as required by the Act, the Chief Superintendent of the division in which the car in question was recovered signed a certificate dated 21 December 1998 certifying the manner in which the damage occurred, which will enable the owner to make their claim to the relevant local authority.
