Vol. 506 No. 3

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

John Gormley

Question:

66 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the European Commission is to produce a directive which may call for restrictive legislation on vitamin and mineral supplements and herbal products; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15550/99]

While the question of the controls that should apply to products in these categories is under consideration by the European Commission, I am not aware that any proposals for legislation in the matter have yet been made. I am aware that, in the case of medicinal products, consideration is being given by the Commission to the making of legislative proposals which will also assist with the authorisation of herbal medicinal products by providing greater legislative clarification with regard to the concept of "well established medicinal uses".
