Vol. 506 No. 3

Written Answers. - Child Abuse.

John Gormley

Question:

67 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps, if any, he will take to deal with the issue of those falsely accused of child sexual abuse; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there have been 50 cases confirmed by the health boards; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15551/99]

I am aware that complaints have been made to the Medical Council by persons who feel that they were falsely accused of child sexual abuse and that the council is currently dealing with this matter. I am also aware that one person who feels that he was falsely accused of child sexual abuse is taking a case in the High Court.

Against this background, it would not be appropriate for me to take action pending the outcome of the Medical Council's investigation and the hearing of the case by the High Court.
