Vol. 506 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cancer Incidence.

David Stanton

Question:

73 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received any reports of alleged cancer clusters in the State; if so, the investigations, if any, carried out as a result; if he will give details in this regard; the action, if any, taken or planned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15622/99]

The National Cancer Registry, which collects and analyses data relating to all forms of cancer in Ireland, has responded to two requests for examinations of possible cancer clusters. In both instances the registry concluded that there was no evidence of a raised incidence of cancer in the areas concerned.

At present the National Cancer Registry is co-operating with the Northern Ireland cancer registry in looking at cancer incidence in adults in the Louth, South Armagh, Newry and Mourne districts from 1994 to 1997 and for childhood leukaemia and lymphoma from 1974 to 1997. It is expected that this study will be concluded next year.
