Seán Ryan

Question:

8 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide details of all non-Civil Service staff within his Department including details of the posts held, qualifications for the posts and salary; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15618/99]

The following non-established staff are currently employed in my office and the office of the Minister of State. There are no specific qualifications required for the different posts and their functions are as indicated by their titles.

Does the post of adviser to the Minister include the previous, established post of child care adviser?

Child care adviser to the Department?

That would be a Civil Service position. There is a person appointed as child care officer but that would be a Civil Service position. The question relates to non-Civil Service staff.

I take it that that post was advertised in the normal way?

It may not have been. It was a redeployment within our staff. I can check that and I will give the Deputy the full information about it.

I am amazed that one member of the Minister's non-Civil Service staff receives a salary of £10,000. Can the Minister explain how anyone is expected to survive in Dublin on £10,000? Students receive maintenance grants—

A question, please.

Can the Minister explain this?

The person lives in Cork. That is the secretarial rate. It is not great and I take the Deputy's point.

The Minister is waiting for the minimum wage.
