Vol. 506 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

David Stanton

Question:

233 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 116 of 28 January 1999, the progress, if any, made on the introduction of escorts on all special school transport services; if all these schools will be able to avail of the scheme at the beginning of the next school year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15793/99]

Officials of my Department are in discussion with the management body for special schools and Bus Éireann who operate the transport service on behalf of my Department, regarding the introduction of escorts on the special school transport service.

It is intended that this service will be introduced in the next school year and that it will be available for transport services to all special schools and special classes. In the interim, my Department has made a number of escort grants available to the management of schools where particular and immediate safety concerns have arisen.
