Vol. 506 No. 5

Written Answers. - Proceedings Against the State.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

47 Mr. Gilmore asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position regarding the claim against the State by Anglo Irish Beef Processors arising from a decision to cancel certain export credit insurance; if her attention has been drawn to reports that Iraq is to repay all debts to this company; the information, if any, she has on this report; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15827/99]

Proceedings against the State were initiated by Anglo Irish Beef Processors International Limited in 1989 in response to a decision by the Minister to void certain export credit cover. An amended statement of claim was lodged by the plaintiffs in 1995. Pleadings in the case have not yet been finalised.

Apart from what was contained in a number of media reports towards the end of last year, I have no information about any commitment by Iraq to pay the debts owed to Anglo Irish Beef Processors Limited.
