81 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the amounts paid to trade unions between 1980 and 1999 for the purposes of mergers or for activities in the pursuit of mergers; and the trade unions which received each amount in these years. [15703/99]
The payment of grants to trade unions in respect of mergers is governed by the Trade Union Act 1975 which is designed to facilitate amalgamations and transfers of engagements among trade unions by simplifying procedures and by making grants available from the Exchequer towards the costs incurred by the unions in the process. Since 1980 grants totalling £2,182,639.10 have been paid by my Department in respect of thirty amalgamations or transfers of engagements and one failed merger attempt, the details of which for each of the years in which a grant was paid are set out in the following tables:
