Vol. 506 No. 5

Written Answers. - War Crimes.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

103 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs Ireland's position arising from the UN decision on the war crimes of the President of the former Yugoslavia; if he will support the UN stance in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15702/99]

I have made known on a number of previous occasions the support of the Government for the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. I have also made clear that, together with our EU partners, we are resolved that those who planned, authorised and carried out the policy of deportation and destruction of the people of Kosovo must be held personally accountable and brought to justice before the International Tribunal at The Hague.

The registrar of the tribunal has now formally informed Ireland and all other member states of the United Nations about the indictments and arrest warrants-orders for surrender which the tribunal has issued in respect of Slobodan Milosevic and four of his principal associates. The Government will be supporting the tribunal in its prosecution of these cases.
