Vol. 507 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Jim Higgins

Question:

217 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when a decision will be made in respect of a file currently with the Attorney General seeking an investigation into the hearing of an inquest held on 4 December 1992 where there is an allegation that vital evidence was withheld (details supplied). [16302/99]

I wish to point out to the Deputy that the Attorney General is completely independent in the exercise of his powers under the Coroner's Act, 1962 in the ordering of an inquest and that I have no function in this regard.

However, I understand from the Attorney General's office that inquiries have recently been completed on the case mentioned by the Deputy. Although the issues are complex, it is anticipated that the matter will be submitted in the near future to the Attorney General for a decision.
