Vol. 508 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Ownership Transfer.

Ulick Burke

Question:

178 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Health and Children if his Department will fund the Western Health Board in order that Portiuncula Hospital can continue its full development plan if it is eventually taken under its management; if he will confirm that no cutbacks will occur at this hospital causing ward closure or waiting lists in the future; if he will guarantee the continuation and development of the current range of services provided by this hospital and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19330/99]

I understand that discussions are ongoing between the Western Health Board and the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood, as owners of Portiuncula Hospital, in relation to a transfer of ownership of the hospital.

I am appreciative of the significant role played by Portiuncula Hospital in the delivery of acute hospital services to its catchment area and envisage this continuing and being developed into the future under any new ownership arrangements that may emerge.
