Written Answers. - Live Register.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

200 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of people on the live register; the percentage of people receiving a payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19218/99]

The number of people on the live register at the end of September 1999 was 186,183, comprising of 61,838 unemployment benefit claimants, 108,940 unemployment assistance claimants and 15,405 claimants who are signing for credited PRSI contributions only. This is the lowest live register at any time since December 1982.

The percentage of those on the live register receiving a payment is approximately 83 per cent. Those not receiving a payment consist of people signing for credits, new claims awaiting authorisation and claims which are disallowed or suspended for various reasons.
