Vol. 508 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Michael Creed

Question:

232 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will expedite the construction of additional accommodation at St. Colman's national school, Macroom, County Cork, in view of the fact the current alternative accommodation is a risk to students' safety. [19235/99]

Earlier this year my Department approved the commencement of architectural planning for an extension at St. Colman's boys' national school, Macroom. The board of management subsequently engaged a design team to prepare a sketch scheme. A proposal was then submitted to my Department which exceeded the accommodation brief approved and the school was requested to submit revised proposals. These are awaited.

It is a matter for the school management to satisfy itself as to the suitability of alternative accommodation for school purposes and of its compliance with all regulatory requirements, including planning and health and safety matters.
