Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Attendance.

Richard Bruton

Question:

338 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to reports on a case (details supplied) in which it was alleged that the provisions of the School Attendance Acts, 1926 to 1967, were not properly applied; and if he is instituting an inquiry into the matter. [19570/99]

I am aware of the reports to which the Deputy refers. Officials of my Department are in contact with the Garda and the relevant health authorities in an effort to establish the details of this case and in particular the circumstances surrounding the reported failure of the school attendance procedures to highlight the child's non-attendance at school. The Deputy will appreciate that, in the absence of details regarding the case in question, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on the matter at this stage.
