Written Answers. - In-service Training.

Ivor Callely

Question:

58 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education and Science the comprehensive in-service training programmes in place by the National Centre for Technology and Education for teachers on information technology; if he has satisfied himself with the support and funding available to schools on information technology especially for training; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19789/99]

The National Centre for Technology in Education, NCTE, has responsibility for the development of a strategic training programme for teachers in ICT in education. The following are the details of the provision of places for teachers on in-service training programmes in information and communication technology under Schools IT 2000: 1998, 24,909 places on 1,660 courses; 1999, 21,000 places on 1,400 courses. Some of these are being undertaken during this current quarter.

The training course titles are as follows: phase 1 and phase 2 – ICT introductory courses; Internet and basic troubleshooting; ICT in the primary curriculum; post-primary curriculum based courses; special needs; pedagogic skills development for school integration project participants and specialised courses for ICT tutors.

Thus, in the three year period from 1998 to the end of 2000, a total of 60,109 places on 4,007 courses are being provided for teachers on ICT in education under Schools IT 2000. This is a significant achievement and emphasises the level of funding and support underpinning the Schools IT 2000 programme.
