Vol. 509 No. 4

Written Answers. - Census of Population.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

102 Mr. Kirk asked the Taoiseach when the next census will be carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20259/99]

The next Census of Population will be taken on 29 April, 2001. The Central Statistics Office is at present concluding the fieldwork phase of a census pilot test. The pilot covers 8,000 households nationally and is designed to test the layout and content of the census questionnaire along with alternative fieldwork procedures.

Once the results of the pilot test have been analysed the CSO, in consultation with a broadly representative group of census users, will make a recommendation to Government by April 2000 at the latest on the questions to be included in the 2001 census.
