Vol. 509 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Personnel.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

163 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the age at which a corporal, sergeant or company sergeant can transfer from an infantry unit in the FCÁ to a unit in An Slua Muirí; the age at which these ranks can transfer from an infantry unit in the FCÁ to a corps unit in the FCÁ; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20723/99]

The criteria which enable an applicant to transfer from one corps to another, or from An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil to An Slua Muirí, are as follows. The applicant must first apply for transfer to his-her commanding officer. The applicant must be recommended for transfer by his-her commanding officer. A vacancy must exist in the proposed corps-Slua Muirí. The applicant must satisfy the proposed corps-Slua Muirí that he/she is: qualified to fill such a vacancy; prepared to be reduced in rank, where necessary, to fill such an appointment for which he/she is qualified-in some cases this may be a reduction in rank to private or seaman rank; prepared to undergo such courses and training as to enable him-her to qualify for his-her new corps or an Slua Muirí and prepared, in the case of a transfer to Slua Muirí, to undergo vision and colour tests.

There is no reference in Defence Force regu lations to the maximum age at which a transfer from one corps to another, or from An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil to An Slua Muirí, can take place.
Defence Force regulations lay down a maximum age of 45 years at which former members of the Permanent Defence Force, First Line Reserve, An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil or An Slua Muirí may be assigned to An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil or An Slua Muirí.
