157 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on adult illiteracy; the plans if any he has to improve the situation in relation to funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
High levels of literacy and numeracy are a pre-requisite for participation in our society today, and the Government is committed to increasing investment in this area on a phased basis. In that context, provision for adult literacy has increased from a base of £0.850 million in 1997 when this Government took office, to £5.665 million in 1999.
