Vol. 509 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inland Fisheries.

Willie Penrose

Question:

86 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there has been a request made to the Central Fisheries Board for the introduction of triploids to Lough Owel, Mullingar, County Westmeath, in view of the fact that these would be important for tourism in the midlands area; his further views on the desirability and importance of the introduction of triploids to these lakes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20818/99]

Primary responsibility for fishery development in Lough Owel is a matter between the ESB, the Central Fisheries Board and the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

I am aware that there has been a request by local angling interests for the introduction of triploid rainbow trout to Lough Owel which is leased to the Central Fisheries Board by the ESB under certain conditions.

I understand that the request is under consideration at present and that there are many factors which need to be addressed before a final decision on the request can be made, including the impact of such a development on the valuable brown trout fishery and brown trout restocking programme; the possibility that some of the rainbow trout to be stocked could be diploids capable of spawning, and the designation of Lough Owel as a national heritage area.

I have asked the Central Fisheries Board to let the Deputy know the position when a decision is made on the matter.
