Vol. 510 No. 5

Written Answers. - Task Force Report.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

214 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science his views in relation to recommendation 1.3.4 of the Donegal task force initiative report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23078/99]

As I have indicated previously, educational institutions will play a full part in addressing the human resource aspects of the task force report, including recommendation 1.3.4..

Letterkenny Institute of Technology has indicated that it is anxious to play its part in the implementation of the strategies proposed in this report. I understand that the institute is developing proposals on the basis of the recommendations contained in the report and my Department will give due attention to these proposals when they are received. Presumably, they will be included, if appropriate, in the annual programmes and budget submission from the Institute.

The VEC provides a range of programmes in business, international teleservices, information technology, community care, child care and sport and recreation, allied with programmes for early school leavers, adults with literacy difficulties, and the VTOS programme for the unemployed. Childcare provision for VTOS, Youthreach and traveller participants has been provided in Buncrana and Letterkenny, and the adult literacy provision has been increased. It is intended that initiatives in the field of second chance education will be further expanded in the light of developments under the National Development Plan.
