Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fluoride Safety.

John Gormley

Question:

220 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if he can provide scientific evidence which proves that fluoride is safe; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23210/99]

All of the reputable scientific evidence confirms the safety of fluoride when it is available in public piped water supplies at the optimal levels. These levels are the same as those required by the regulations.

There is an abundance of scientific evidence, which is easily accessible, to attest to the safety of fluoride at the levels which have been optimally determined by scientific research.

Question:

221 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children the studies, if any, carried out on the toxicity of sodium fluoride to all body organs before it was added to drinking water supplies in 1963; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23211/99]

The Fluorine Consultative Council fully evaluated the research and concluded that adding fluoride to water at the levels set out in the Health (Fluoridation of Water Supplies) Act, 1960, No. 4 of 1960, was safe for human health.
