Vol. 511 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Yield.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

245 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties of local authorities in acquiring land compulsorily, or otherwise, for road widening or new roads as a result of the 40 per cent capital gains tax applicable to these transactions; if his attention has further been drawn to similar difficulties in relation to urban renewal schemes, particularly in towns recently designated, due to the application of the 40 per cent rate to commer cial property; and the steps, if any, he will take to address these matters. [25463/99]

Various interest groups have drawn my attention to what they consider to be anomalies arising from the 40 per cent GGT rate applicable on disposals of non-residential development land. I will bear this issue in mind in the context of overall policy for the forthcoming budget and Finance Bill.
