Written Answers. - Student Statistics.

Michael Ferris

Question:

56 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education and Science the statistical information which exists documenting the participation of students from Protestant denominations in third level education institutions; and the plans, if any, he has to upgrade this information. [25359/99]

Willie Penrose

Question:

87 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the participation of Northern Irish students from Protestant denominations in third level education institutions here; and the way in which these enrolments could be increased. [25360/99]

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

111 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of students from Northern Ireland studying here by individual college and university over the past five years. [25356/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 56, 87 and 111 together.

Neither my Department nor the Higher Education Authority compiles student statistical information by reference to religious denomination and there are no plans to compile such information. The statistical information on the numbers of full-time students from Northern Ireland studying at third level institutions is set out on the accompanying table for the years 1993-94 to 1997-98, the five most recent years for which this data is available.

I expect the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will encourage and facilitate greater mobility of students of all denominations within the island of Ireland.
