Vol. 512 No. 3

Written Answers - Pension Provisions.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

271 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if he will appoint an inspector to investigate the funding of the number two pension fund at the former Irish Press plc group in view of the long-standing and deep concerns that this fund was seriously underfunded especially during the years preceding the collapse of the group. [25812/99]

The monitoring and supervision of occupational pension schemes such as the one to which the Deputy refers in the question is the statutory responsibility of the Pensions Board, and the appointment of an inspector does not arise.

I take very seriously any concerns expressed regarding the funding of occupational pension schemes and I have therefore requested the Pensions Board to carry out an examination of the matter and report back to me as soon as possible.
