311 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if he intends to introduce physical education as a leaving certificate subject in September 2000; and, if so, when he will advertise for teaching positions in this regard. [26033/99]
The NCCA is currently preparing a leaving certificate syllabus in physical education. It is unlikely that this new syllabus will be ready for introduction before 2001.
When the NCCA's work nears completion, an assessment of the needs emerging for the introduction of the new syllabuses will be undertaken.
Teachers of physical education are already employed in schools. The appointment of additional teachers is a matter for the relevant school authorities.
