Vol. 512 No. 3

Written Answers - Education Centres.

Michael Creed

Question:

314 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the establishment of the Irish curriculum development unit; the proposed location of the unit and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26049/99]

I take it that the Deputy is referring to the development of a new all-Irish education centre, which I announced recently.

The board of Údarás na Gaeltachta has agreed to provide a site for the project in the grounds of Coláiste Íosagáin, Baile Bhúirne, County Cork. Planning will commence immediately and it is anticipated that construction will start in May-June 2000.

The centre will form an important addition to the existing education centre network of 19 full-time and 11 part-time centres strategically located throughout the country. The network is an essential element of the infrastructure required to deliver in-service training for teachers in the primary, post-primary and further education areas.
