David Stanton

Question:

316 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the need to appoint resource teachers to St. Bridget's presentation primary school and St. John the Baptist primary school, Midleton, County Cork; when he will sanction these appointments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26060/99]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that a resource teacher post has recently been sanctioned to cater for pupils with special needs attending the two schools in question.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

317 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of women employed as school principals at primary level; the percentage this represents of the total number of principals; the way in which this compares with the male-female balance of all primary teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26061/99]

In the current school year there are 1,627 female principals employed in primary schools. This represents 48% of the total number of principals employed, whereas 78% of all permanent teachers employed in primary schools in the current school year are female. The appointment of primary school principals is a matter for the managerial authorities of the school concerned.

The Constitution of Boards and Rules of Procedure for Boards of Management specifies that the established criteria of the selection board must take account of the provisions of the Employment Equality Act, 1977 and the Code of Practice of the Employment Equality Agency, 1983. The selection board must also ensure that the criteria do not lead to discrimination against any applicant on the grounds of gender or marital status.
The percentage of female applicants for posts of principal in primary schools who were successful in obtaining posts has increased in recent years. In 1995 the percentage of successful female applicants was 20%, whereas 25% were successful in 1998.
