Vol. 512 No. 3

Written Answers - Electricity Generation.

Austin Deasy

Question:

93 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the percentage of electricity generated from wind farms; and the maximum projected level she would like to see attained. [26029/99]

The percentage of electricity generated from wind energy sources amounted to approximately 0.8% in 1998.

The Green Paper on Sustainable Energy increased the target for installed electricity generating capacity from renewable technologies, particularly wind energy, in the period 2000 to 2005. The working target for installed capacity has been increased to 500 megawatts which represents a three fold increase on the previous target. I have recently set up a group to devise a strategy for the achievement of this target.

I have placed no upper limit on the increase in the generation of electricity from this resource.
