95 D'fhiafraigh Mr. Sargent den Aire Fiontar Poiblí an bhfuil sí ar an eolas faoi réamhinsint an ESRI a deir go mbeidh fás sa mhéid fuinnimh a chaithfidh an córas taistil agus go mbeidh ardú 62% ar leibhéil 1998 faoin mbliain 2015 dá réir; agus, de thoradh an eolais seo, an molfaidh sí do dhaoine gan taisteal amach anseo má tá dul as acu ach amháin ar rothar nó ag siúl. The transport sector already accounts for a significant proportion of energy use and continues to grow as a percentage of final energy demand. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions from transport are growing faster than any other sector in the economy.

The Green Paper on Sustainable Energy, which I published in September last, identified measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector. Increasing the safety of walking and cycling was highlighted as an option to meeting the growing demand for mobility provided the infrastructure was in place to facilitate it.

My Department, along with other Government Departments and some private organisations, is taking part in a pilot project which aims to help develop green commuter plans. The commuter plan will assist staff to change to more energy efficient means of commuting thus reducing congestion and improving quality of life for everyone. The project is funded under the EU energy conservation programme, SAVE11, and is overseen by the Dublin Transportation Office.
