Vol. 512 No. 6

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

Phil Hogan

Question:

312 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amount allocated to local authorities for 2000; the amount required to compensate the same authorities for national pay awards and the establishment of the strategic policy committees; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26986/99]

It is a matter for each local authority to determine its own expenditure requirements in the context of its annual estimates. Expenditure arising as a result of national pay awards and the establishment of strategic policy committees would be dealt with by local authorities in this estimates context. Such expenditure is funded from a variety of sources, including the local government fund and other State grants, rates, and fees and charges.

Grants totalling £339.3 million have been allocated to local authorities from the local government fund in respect of the year 2000 as a contribution towards their general purpose needs, including the costs of national pay awards and the establishment of strategic policy committees. It is ultimately a matter for each individual local authority to decide as to how its local government fund allocation is spent.
