Vol. 512 No. 6

Written Answers. - Civil Service Marriage Ban.

Phil Hogan

Question:

323 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of former civil and public service workers who retired from the service due to the requirement arising from the marriage ban between 1953 and the removal of this restriction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27104/99]

The restriction on the employment of married women in the Civil Service was abolished with effect from 31 July 1973.

In order to compile the information which is requested by the Deputy it will be necessary to examine a large amount of old records which are in manual format and there is considerable work involved.

The Department will have the data which the Deputy has asked for abstracted from the records and it will be furnished by the end of the January, if possible.
