Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Nora Owen

Question:

209 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the proposals, if any, she has to commence planning for the extension of the DART to Balbriggan; the timescale for the commencement of the DART service to Malahide; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1896/00]

In March last year the Government approved the commissioning by CIE of a costing and feasibility study of the longer-term development of the suburban rail network. The study is still ongoing. I expect the consultants' report to be finalised in the next couple of weeks.

As regards the DART service to Malahide, Iarnród Éireann advise me that the infrastructural work is almost completed and that a limited service is expected to commence from July 2000.

A full service should be in place by the end of this year when all the new DART rolling stock on order has been delivered.
