Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Denis Naughten

Question:

81 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, the Office of Public Works has to compensate householders whose homes have been damaged due to the excessive flooding in the Shannon basin over the Christmas period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2032/00]

The Arterial Drainage (Amendment) Act, 1995 empowers the Commissioners of Public Works to undertake flood relief schemes for the purpose of preventing or reducing localised flooding where it occurs periodically and moneys are provided annually by the Exchequer in the Vote for the Office of Public Works for such works. However, there are no other funds allocated in the Office of Public Works Vote which could be made available to compensate householders whose homes have been damaged due to flooding in the Shannon basin.
