Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospitals Building Programme.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

199 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the need for an extension to Bandon District Hospital; and if he will make funding available for that purpose. [2389/00]

I have been advised by the Southern Health Board that it has adopted a strategy ageing with confidence for the people of Cork and Kerry and this strategy envisages the community hospital as the focal point for the provision and delivery of care including such services as acute care, rehabilitation, respite, palliative and continuing care. The board recognises that significant investment, together with the development of resources, including community and district hospitals, is required to ensure that these are appropriate to the delivery of care and allow for a wider access to a range of services for the older person. Detailed plans for the implementation of the strategy are in the final stages of preparation and will include Bandon Community Hospital within the context as outlined above.

On the particular issue of Bandon, I understand that the local voluntary fund-raising group has collected approximately £30,000 towards the cost of providing a day room at the community hospital. I am advised that the Southern Health Board is preparing a submission to my Department concerning the balance of the funding needed to carry out such work. I will give careful consideration to the board's application when it is received.
