Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Car Test.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

229 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason the Carriage Office is informing hackney drivers with older cars that before being passed out they must have a national car test and when they present for a national car test they are informed that they are only permitted to test private cars; and if he will rectify his situation with the utmost urgency. [2502/00]

The Road Traffic (National Car Test) regulations, 1999, do not apply to the roadworthiness testing of small public service vehicles. It is proposed to review these arrangements later this year, in consultation with the Garda authorities, with a view to the transfer of such vehicle testing to the new national car test.

In the meantime, the Garda Commissioner remains the appropriate vehicle testing authority for small public service vehicles and my Department has confirmed this position to the Garda authorities.
