Question:

273 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, the Government has to provide more prison places; the plans, if any, he has to provide extra places in the Cork area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2228/00]

Prison service officials, including the prison governor in conjunction with the Office of Public Works, are preparing proposals for consideration to provide additional cellular accommodation and ancillary facilities at Cork Prison.

274 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has in relation to the prison located on Spike Island in Cork Harbour; the proposals, if any, to close this prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2229/00]

I have no plans to close the prison at Fort Mitchel, Spike Island. In fact, I have provided funds for the construction of a new prison kitchen and improved office accommodation for which a tender competition is under way.
