Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - Film Industry Development.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

95 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the plans, if any, she has to provide adequate financial resources for the Irish Film Board in view of the decision to reject the recommendation of the review group to impose a 5% levy on cinema tickets and video rentals; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2325/00]

I have provided for grants totalling £6 million this year for the Irish Film Board. This represents an increase of more than 10% on the amounts paid to the board in 1999. I do not consider that imposing a levy on cinema seats and video sales and rentals is an appropriate funding mechanism for the activities of the board.
