Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - Radon Gas.

Michael Ring

Question:

135 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the steps, if any, being taken, to inform people of the dangers of radon gas and its link with lung cancer; if she will introduce a grant to reduce the number of radon gas linked cancer cases; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2236/00]

I would refer the Deputy to my response to previous parliamentary questions in regard to radon gas, most recently, my response to Questions Nos. 42 on 7 December 1999 and 27 and 59 on 3 November 1999.

In recent years, the Radiological Protection Institute has issued numerous press releases, given interviews on radio and television and has participated in public meetings and press conferences concerning radon. In addition, it has published six reports detailing the results of its national survey on radon levels in domestic dwellings which was completed last July. In the last week, the institute announced the results of the first phase of its national survey on radon in schools. This survey was commissioned by the Minister for Education and Science. The second phase of this survey is under way. The Department of Education and Science is making arrangements for radon remediation measures to be taken in all schools where such measures are deemed necessary.

An advice booklet entitled Radon in Buildings produced by the Department of the Environment and Local Government is available from the Government Publications Sale Office. This booklet provides advice to householders and builders on preventative and remedial measures which can be undertaken in new and existing buildings to reduce high radon concentrations.
The Government is not in a position to provide funding this year for a scheme of grant assistance towards radon remediation works in households. I will keep this matter under review.
