Vol. 513 No. 6

Written Answers. - Road Haulage Permits.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

334 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that fees for wide-load licensing by local authorities vary from zero to several hundred pounds depending on the area; if he will introduce a national system for this licensing to eliminate this anomaly; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3237/00]

Responsibility for issuing special permits for the haulage of abnormal indivisible loads has long been assigned to local authorities under the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963 to 1968. Some local authorities avail of their general powers under the local government legislation to determine and apply charges, at their discretion, for such permits.

There is no proposal to change these arrangements.
