Vol. 513 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Question:

426 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will respond to a recent report from the Holy Rosary school, Ballycragh, Tallaght, Dublin 24, in connection with the participation of non-national children in the primary school system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3066/00]

The appointment of a temporary teacher to Holy Rosary School, Ballycragh, was sanctioned in December last to address the needs of pupils in the school who have English language deficits.

The Deputy may be familiar with the recently announced initiatives which are designed to ensure that there is appropriate educational provision in place for non-English speaking pupils at primary school level.

My Department is currently assessing the needs of a number of schools where such pupils have been enrolled, and will be providing additional teaching resources to schools with 15 or more pupils with English language deficits. Schools which have between four and 14 such pupils will be grant aided to enable them to acquire the services of a suitably qualified person to teach English to the non-English speaking pupils.

Schools with three or fewer such pupils would be expected to provide for the educational provisions of those pupils from within their existing resources.
