Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - VAT Liability.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

170 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Finance if there are meat factories which have been liable for VAT as a consequence of importation of lambs from Northern Ireland and Scotland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3664/00]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that investigations have been carried out on a number of lamb slaughter houses in connection with the payment of the flat rate refunds on lambs sourced from outside the State.

Precise evidence relating to the country of origin of such lambs is not available but the bulk of the lambs in question are understood to have been imported from Northern Ireland. Investigations in respect of a number of slaughter houses have been completed and underpayments of VAT of the order of £340,000 have been agreed with the traders concerned. Investigations are ongoing in other plants.
