Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Disciplinary Proceedings.

Billy Timmins

Question:

215 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the compensation, if any, which was paid to any members of the Garda Síochána between 1987 and 1993 following internal disciplinary hearings; if so, the number of members; the amounts involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3669/00]

The Garda Commissioner is vested, under legislation with the general direction and control of the Garda Síochána, including matters of discipline which are governed by the Garda Síochána (Discipline) Regulations. There is no provision in the regulations which allows for payment of compensation to members of the Garda Síochána who are the subject of internal disciplinary hearings.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they have no record of any settlements-awards resulting from legal actions following internal disciplinary hearings during the period 1987-93.
