Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

88 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will give a report on the working of the task force established following the announcement of the closure of a factory (details supplied) in Dunmanway; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the final closure is expected to take place on 11 February 2000; and when suitable alternative industry will be established there. [3357/00]

The inter-agency task force was established following the announcement by Molnlycke on 3 December 1999 that the company will close on 11 February 2000 with the loss of 113 jobs. This group has met on three occasions to date.

The inter-agency task force, chaired by IDA Ireland, comprises representatives of IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, FÁS, West Cork County Enterprise Board and the county manager for west Cork. The main focus is on attracting a replacement industry and providing assistance to employees such as advice on alternative career opportunities and training/retraining courses. The type of training offered will depend on the type of replacement industry that might be secured for the town. A marketing brochure has been prepared on the facility, incorporating a profile of the workforce and the town, and has been circulated to all IDA overseas offices and operating divisions for active marketing. Existing companies in the region that may have an interest in the facility have also been contacted. The development agencies will do their utmost to secure alternative employment for the workers affected by this unfortunate closure.
